Bachelor of Laws (LLB)

Lead College: Laws Consortium - Birkbeck, King's College London, The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Queen Mary, School of Oriental and African Studies and UCL (University College London)

Where: Palace House Campus
Who: For those interested in a career in law, that wish to develop a critical awareness of the common law legal tradition and be able to apply analytical and problem-solving skills in a range of legal and non-legal settings.

Course Features:

  • Development of strong analytical and critical skills
  • Development of sophisticated problem solving skills


Teaching and Learning:

You will receive weekly one-hour lectures that deliver core concepts and understanding. These are then supported by at least one seminar each week to consolidate and apply the learning achieved in lectures. Course notes are provided and closely linked with online library and learning facilities.

In addition to the lecture and seminar programme, you will receive regular skills-based and exam question focus support sessions to help you study effectively and to prepare for forthcoming exams. You will also receive regular academic assessment to monitor your progress and identify problems early on, so the academic team can tackle them. In the latter half of the second semester each year, you will receive intensive revision courses to help you prepare for the exams ahead.

Course Structure:

Year 1 (Semester 1 and 2)

Your first year is spent in studying for the intermediate examination, the foundation for your LLB.

Intermediate examination (four subjects)
  • Common law reasoning and institutions. Learning all about the legal institutions and structures of England and Wales
  • Criminal Law. Studying the principles on which the criminal courts interpret and enforce the law
  • Elements of the law of Contract. Understanding the background to most commercial and legal relationships
  • Public Law. How our constitution and public bodies work, understanding the role that human rights, the courts, Parliament and the government play in our everyday lives
Years 2 (Semester 3 and 4)

In the second year, you will study for Part 1 of their final examination by taking the following subjects plus one option:

Final examination Part I (three subjects)
  • Land law
  • Law of tort
  • Law trusts
AND one optional subject
  • Administrative law
  • Civil and criminal law
  • Commercial law
  • Company law
  • Criminology
  • EU law
  • Evidence
  • Family law
  • History of English law
  • International protection of human rights
  • Introduction to Islamic law
  • Labour law
  • Public International law
Years 3 (Semester 5 and 6)

In their third and final year, you will take one further subject and choose three options from the list below:

Final examination Part II (one subject)
  • - Jurisprudence and legal theory
AND three optional subjects from the following:
  • Administrative law
  • Civil and criminal law
  • Commercial law
  • Company law
  • Criminology
  • EU law
  • Evidence
  • Family law
  • History of English law
  • International protection of human rights
  • Introduction to Islamic law
  • Labour law
  • Public International law
  • Conflict of laws
  • Intellectual property
  • Succession
  • Dissertation
