BSc Accounting and Finance

Who: For those interested in a future professional career as a qualified accountant or for those interested in working in banking and finance.

Course Features:

  • Excellent grounding in accounting and finance
  • Possible exemption from professional papers leading to a fast track professional accountancy qualification
  • Foundation for further study in accounting or quantitative investment discipline
  • Development of decision-making and analytical skills


Teaching and Learning:

You will receive weekly one-hour lectures that deliver core concepts and understanding. These are then supported by at least one seminar each week to consolidate and apply the learning achieved in lectures. Course notes are provided and closely linked with online library and learning facilities.

In addition to the lecture and seminar programme, you will receive regular skills-based and exam question focus support sessions to help you study effectively and to prepare for forthcoming exams. You will also receive regular academic assessment to monitor your progress and identify problems early on, so the academic team can tackle them. In the latter half of the second semester each year, you will receive intensive revision courses to help you prepare for the exams ahead.

Course Structure:

Each year you will sit for four modules. This normally comprises a mix of core and non-core modules. Some half modules are available allowing a broader range of subjects to be studied. Optional modules are indicative and do not represent the full range of subjects on offer. Whether a module is run depends on student demand and it is not practice to run a module for less than 10 students.

Year 1 (Semester 1 and 2)
Core
  • Introduction to economics
  • Statistics 1 (half unit)
  • Mathematics 1 (half unit)
  • Principles of Accounting
Options

A single additional module or two half modules.

Subjects include:

  • Statistics 2 (half unit)
  • Mathematics 2 (half unit)
  • Economic History in the 20th century
  • Introduction to modern political thought
  • Introduction to business and management
Years 2 and 3 (Semesters 3 to 6)
Core
  • Principles of banking and finance
  • Managerial economics or microeconomics
  • Financial Management or Corporate finance
  • Financial reporting
  • Auditing and assurance
  • Management accounting
Options

Two option modules.  Subjects include:

  • Investment management
  • Valuation and securities analysis
  • Quantitative finance
  • International economics
  • Elements of econometrics
  • Strategy
  • Principles of marketing
