Things To Do In London

As a student living in London, there are plenty of things you can do in your spare time, and many of them won’t cost you a penny. Each area of London has its unique culture, appeal and things to do, which is why London has been described as 'a city made of villages’. Below are some of the many ways that you can fill your time in London (when not studying, of course!).

Landmarks

London’s landmarks are famous throughout the world for their history and individuality. Tourists come from far and wide to see London’s treasures, so while you’re studying here, it’s definitely worth taking a look for yourself.  Many of the best things are free, such as the British Museum and the Tate Modern art gallery, so there really is no excuse for not checking them out! Some more London landmarks to visit are:

Shopping

London is one of the fashion capitals of Europe, with everything from high street shops to high end designer boutiques. Around Oxford Street is where all the big high street chains have their flagship stores. Primark, Topshop and H&M are some of the biggest high street names in the area. For upmarket shopping head to Mayfair, where you can pick up a designer handbag for a small fortune!

Sport

London represents all kinds of sporting events, and is host to some of the top teams in the world. For those who love football, London is home to teams like Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Fulham. Fans can go their games or do tours of their stadiums. Likewise, there is opportunity to watch top cricket, tennis and rugby. This year sees London host the Olympic games, which will confirm its standing as a world-class sporting city. Nightlife

London’s nightlife is diverse as its people. Each of London’s areas provides a totally different kind of night. For dance and pop music, Londoners head to the centre around Leicester Square and Covent Garden. For a bit of punk and rock, head to Camden, and for something a bit different, head eastwards to Shoreditch. ‘Superclubs’ such as Fabric and Ministry of Sound provide the ultimate going out experience, for those who love to party!

Music

Londoners love their music, and because of this, it attracts some of the best musicians in the world. As with the nightlife, the different areas of London have their own distinct musical styles: Camden is known for its punk, Shoreditch for its alternative music. London also has world class venues, such as the Royal Albert Hall, the O2 arena, and the Roundhouse.

Eating Out

London has eating options to suit all budgets, from tasty takeaways to gourmet restaurant meals. The diversity of London’s population means that you can taste quality food from all over the world, helping to shake off England’s reputation for dull, unadventurous grub! If you’re looking for something a bit special, celebrity chefs like Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsey compete for the best restaurants in the city. Useful websites for finding good food in London are:
